Two things to take note of, Lauren is wearing 4 inch heels (Russ hasn't shrunk that much) and Steven IS dressed up (he covered his plain white tee with a sweat shirt). I was so happy to have all of us together I didn't care what anyone wore. As I mentioned in the last post we don't see Steven much anymore and we kinda miss him. I always thought I wanted to be an empty nester, but right now I'm thankful that my daughter is still home, she helps out so much with the running around of her grandma and dad and with other errands Russ would normally do.
Russ has been very busy with doctors, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and a pain management program. He's got something going everyday, which is good as it doesn't give him time to worry too much. He's really enjoying the pain program, because it is mostly relaxation techniques (he's actually fallen asleep in some of the sessions). He's catching sleep whenever he can since he's up all night going to the bathroom. No it's not prostrate problems, it seems that the urethra didn't heal as well as we hoped so now his bladder never fully empties. The poor guy spends more time in the bathroom than out. As of today's' doctors appointment he will have to have a new catheter put in to make sure his bladder empties and does not cause too much pressure on his kidneys. This is a temporary fix while they are trying to get him in to see a "World Renown Urologists" up in Irvine that does these special urethral repairs (I was told it's like sewing tissue paper together).
So today is on the downhill side of the roller coaster ride for Russ, as he was really hoping there would be a simple fix this time. However, in typical Russ fashion he took a few minutes to feel bad and then moved forward to the next appointment with a smile on his face. Our motto around here is "You gotta laugh or you'll cry".
I'll update as we learn more about his surgery, keep on praying, and come by and visit if you're in the area.

Time Flys

Well so much for posting every week, every night I think I'm going to get to that post and every night I end up in bed sleeping. So now that the time has changed and my body thinks it's 8:30 I'm finally awake to post.

This is a picture of us at our dear friend Amy's wedding, notice Russ is standing with no walker and has on dress-up clothes. Yes, he's walking on his own the therapists told him to get rid of the walker and so he has. I was nervous about him being around the dogs and small children and being off balance. So his 5'3" tiny therapist took him outside to walk on the uneven grass and started pushing him, on his side, bumped his leg, pushed his shoulder, and he stayed upright with little trouble. So of course Russ couldn't let this opportunity pass to have a little fun, he started yelling out for help, saying that she was abusing him. He says there were a few people that stopped to see if he was ok. I guess they had a good laugh.

So now he's on a Tuesday and Thursday therapy rotation, with doctors appointments in between. His caregivers are gone and he is working on his own at home on off days trying to build his strength. We're hoping that he'll be attending the Pain Program at the Re-had center and start learning different ways to deal with his pain so he can be weaned off of the pain meds. Everyday brings a new challenge Sunday it was a bladder infection and today it's either scar tissue in his urethra or an enlarged prostrate. So now my hunny who hates taking pills is consuming 14-18 a day. Wow, how quickly things can change.

We are doing a few more things now and moving around a bit lighter. Saturday the 13th we celebrated Steven's 19th birthday and enjoyed visiting with him. We're really proud of how well Steven is doing at school, but miss him a lot. He's not coming home every weekend any longer because of the cost of gas ( ya 100 bucks a week gets old real quick) he needs a job up in the Riverside area. If anyone knows of part time work in that area let us know, pleasssse.

So I could end this post with a meaningless promise of writing more often, but instead promise to look after Russ and post when possible. Love and thanks to you all for your prayers and well wishes.

Last Handi Shower

This has been Russ' deluxe shower accommodations for the last 2 months. Since the catheter is out and he's showering in the real shower upstairs inside the house, we thought we'd (I of course) would have a little fun with it. YES, Russ is finally hardware free, no casts, no hoses, no wheelchair. It's like when you have a baby and they turn into toddlers and you feel like you have so much more freedom. To go somewhere we just have to load Russ (granted he loads a little slower then a toddler) the walker, and a soft cushion into the car and off we go. We are limited to short trips, but o' boy it feels good to go.

He's been working hard or should I say the therapists are working him hard. He's walking more upright and feeling stronger. He's probably been more sore recently, but that's because he's pushing harder to build endurance and flexibility. His next big move will probably be driving, that won't be for a couple of months so the roads are safe for now. I'll try to post at least once a week with whatever updates we have, thanks for caring.

Another Delay

Today was the day Russ' catheter was supposed to come out. We where at the doctors office Russ had worked himself into a panic, but was also so excited to get rid of his annoying little leg friend. The doctor walks into the room and says "Friday is not a good day to remove a catheter". WHAT, yes he was serious if there are any complications it's not good for them to be on the weekend. Duh Doc you couldn't of told us that prior to us being so excited and driving all the way to La Jolla. Oh and don't forget that now we get to remove it at home on Monday morning. So now we pull it out at home and then wait 4 hours to see if everything is flowing alright, if not we get in the car and drive to his office, for who knows what. Just let me tell you if we have to go to his office on Monday you my see my name in the paper for strangling a doctor with a full catheter hose. What a putz, how about a little concern for the mental health of your patients doc. Well as a very wise women told Russ before "It's not for a lifetime dad, you can do it". Will update Monday on the leg monster.

Valentines Day Surprise

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XJj9GaStTgg/S3t1meKqC4I/AAAAAAAAAF0/ajAgXqBN7B0/s200/DSC05147.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439070278773246850" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 134px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XJj9GaStTgg/S3t1PCUUp7I/AAAAAAAAAFs/1_Lrwlwq54o/s200/DSC05150.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439069876160604082" />

This weekend was a good one, Russ has been working super hard at therapy and somehow keeping me in the dark. Not easy because he can not keep a secret for the life of him. So as you can all see he surprised me by walking up the stairs Sunday morning (yes you're seeing it right no help it's all him). This is amazing the doctors said 12 weeks before he could put full weight on both legs and he healed so well that he's going upstairs in 12 weeks. Of course he still has a lot of pain but he's powering through and determined to get more independent. I let him lay in bed with his shoes on (I figured he earned it). For the first time in 3 months we slept in the same bed on Valentines night. Wow, it felt weird but wonderful at the same time. The dogs were so happy, when they woke up in the morning they all went over and gave dad kisses (I waited for my kiss until the dog slobber was gone). He's spending less time in his wheelchair and went to church on Saturday night using his walker everyone was so happy for him. We're having a little more freedom now, I can lift the walker into the back of the car, no way could I lift the chair. This Friday is another appointment to remove the catheter please pray, this thing really needs to go. If he comes home with a catheter he will be sooo disappointed and I may have to name it and beadazzle it to lift his mood. Gotta laugh or we would cry way too much.

Russ visits Work

Today, Russ had a doctor's appointment in La Jolla he got the ok to start bearing weight on his wrist, this means he can use a regular walker, this is really great news. Since we were already in the neighborhood we stop at Hazard so Russ could say hi, Mario got a little more then a hi (should I be jealous?). It was great to see him in his element and in a vest and hard hat again, too bad he can't play (work) in the dirt yet.

I haven't posted lately so I'll digress and update you all on what's been happening. In my last post I talked about a new medication for nerve pain that Russ started last week. The meds seem to be helping and he's moving better, which means the psychical therapist is working him harder. He's very tired when he comes back from rehab, but in good spirits. He's going up a few stairs (with help), balancing on a board with half ball under it, and doing squats. Wow, who needs a gym membership. His wrist therapist is working on strength, flexibility, and dexterity. He made the mistake one day of saying something she was having him do was easy, boy he says won't do that again.

Russ is working really hard and making good progress, his attitude is good most of the time, and we haven't killed each other. Keep praying it's working.

Rough days

Sometimes it hard to post when there's not anything new or fantastic to post about. if you ask Russ how he's doing he'll always say I'm doing good or he'll reassure everyone that everything will be fine. When I ask him why he does that he says "because people don't want to know the bad stuff". That's Russ always thinking about everyones feelings, before his own. Well the past couple of days have been very tough on him and I think people should know it.

Tuesday we started the day at 4am to be ready for a 5am transport bus to Scripps La Jolla for a 8am procedure. The urologist removed the catheter he's had in since the 16th of Nov. and scoped to see if Russ's urethra had healed. This is what Russ has been waiting weeks for the removal of this pain in the *$# bag, he was coming home with no leash. Now Russ is under general anaesthesia for this so he doesn't know what's happening. So the doctor does his thing and finds that Russ has not totally healed, so a new catheter goes in and Russ wakes up to a big disappointment.

Ok, so what's a couple of more weeks we can do this, no big deal. Then in the post op check out room they give him a leg bag that holds about 8oz of liquid and straps to his thigh (thanks). So I'm on the phone calling his case manager to see if we go to the rehab center can they help us. Remember we are already 8 hours into our day and back in the transport bus headed to the clinic at rehab. Russ is still a little out of it from being under and has the worst cotton mouth ever, I have to limit his water intake though because the bag holds 8oz. He's hurting from being poked and prodded and now we have to go to another hospital to try and get the right equipment for him. In his words "this is disheartening".

When we got to the clinic the Lord took pity on us and things went smoothly, the nurse was available, she was nice and informative (gave us info we could of used weeks ago and life would have been easier). In and out in 45 mins and we're on our way home, Russ was so tired that he slept with workers using compression nail guns 10 feet away from him. Yes we are finally getting a pocket door on the powder room, Russ will be able to get his walker into the restroom and use a real toilet and close the door, yah.

Today he wakes up sore but with a good attitude (my husband is amazing). He has a 4:30 doctors appointment with his rehab doc this is the first one since he was released. The purpose is to see how the transition to home is and how he's feeling. Two hours later the doctor had a good understanding of what he's going through, but probably made a note that we need counseling. Remember how I said Russ won't complain or tell anyone how crappy he feels, he thinks this applies to doctors too. I kept telling her how much pain he was in and he kept minimizing everything ( I wanted to hurt him). I'm sure she thought I was nuts and just babying my husband (if you know me you know I don't baby anyone). So she's trying to figure out why he can't do things if he feels as good as he says he does and I'm pulling my hair out and trying to reason with him that it's not being a sissy to say things hurt after being run over by a truck. I'm saying he's hyper sensitive to touch in certain areas and he's saying no he's not it's normal. Well finally the doctor says drop your pants and touches one of those areas he screams she says it was a feather touch and he finally gets that he shouldn't be in that much pain. Can you believe they have different meds that can help nerve pain, and that's not what he's on because no one except his wife and him knew how much pain he is in because he doesn't tell doctors what they need to know to help him. New meds start tomorrow let's pray for better days, if you ask Russ how he feels and he says fine know that it's his way of making you feel better and tell him he's full of it.

Thanks for letting me rant.

PS
Any men reading this tell your doctors how you really feel and let them figure out if it's normal or not.

It's all in a Days Work

Well Russ is now on a regular schedule for Occupational (for his wrist) and Physical (for his pelvis) therapy. Every Tuesday and Thursday he takes a transport van to Sharp Rehab and spends a couple of hours working to rebuild his muscles. He's getting good reports from his therapists, he's a model student. So as of today he can touch his thumb to the bottom of his little finger, and he can almost lay his arm flat on the table (the back of his arm that is). As for the bottom half of his rehab (the bottom half of his body) he's sitting at a 75 degree angle, and using his walker more, he can put 50 to 60 pounds of pressure on his right leg and is working on his posture when standing.
It's still a slow go, sometimes feelings can get a little touchy (cranky), for both of us. They say he won't be able to get up stairs for a couple more months so we're both lonely at night. It's also hard not being able to get up and go whenever we feel like it. I so miss my husband's company, no errands together, dinners out, drives around town. We go to church every weekend and we are going to try a movie this weekend. Russ is able to sit comfortably in his chair for longer periods of time now so hopefully we'll be getting out a little more.
Next week will be very busy with doctors visits and finally the removal of the hated catheter, we're praying that everything is healed and he'll come home catheter free. Each week gets us a little closer to normal life again. Maybe that's the problem I keep waiting for normal instead of just living in the moment and being thankful for where we are in this season of our life. Thank you Lord for our lives today and tomorrow whatever they bring.

Sis visits

Russ's sister came to visit for a few days to lift his spirits, as you can see it worked. It's painful to have shots in your tummy when you have no fat there. He would have thrown a fit like the kids use to if he thought it would stop the nurse, so for now it's only oral meds. On Thursday he got to go back to therapy just on his wrist for now, but I could tell he felt better doing something. It's getting harder to be up beat all the time, Russ does his best though. I try too he's just better at it.

Not what we expected

Some of you may know that Tuesday Russ was supposed to be having a procedure to remove his catheter, instead we ended up in ER Monday night. Blood clot in the leg, overnight stay at Sharp Memorial, shots in the tummy, blood thinners for a few months and everything should be fine.

Everyday hands us another bump in the road to recovery. His home health nurse says this is common for his type of injuries. Boy, we are learning that we are not very good at bumpy roads. They make you tired and cranky.
Russ's sister arrives tomorrow I'm hoping she can cheer him up and get his mind off the pain that seems to be getting worse instead of better.

He starts back to re-hab in the morning for hand and wrist therapy ya having two hands will definitely improve his mood. Keep the prayers coming, I know my knees are getting calluses, Lord give us strength and humor in these trying times.

Visit to Dr. Smith

Yesterday was eventful, we took the transport van to the doctors 2:30 appointment which means: leave house at 1:20, arrive 2:00, go into back room 4:15, leave Dr. office 5:15, home 6:20. Yes, the Doc was running behind, if Russ could have walked out we would have. The news from the doctor was good though. They finally removed the stitches from his left thigh and as you can see from the xray he is healing well. He can now start to reduce his recline and start to sit more upright a little at a time. He can also start to put a tiny bit of weight on his right leg. So he can go back to therapy now, thank the Lord. If he doesn't get out of the house and talk to some other people soon he may go completely crazy (and I may go before him) I'm sure this is going to test our relationship like nothing else has. He's starting to get cranky and everyone knows I give as good as I get, please pray I learn to let it bounce off me.

Three Amigos Christmas

Well, 2010 is upon us and the Three Amigos had another wonderful gathering. These three men have been friends for 40 years, and family forever. Lucky for the women and children in their lives we love them and each other very much. This year we are all especially grateful for our gathering, we were able to have it in our home (not a hospital) and Anthony the good looking young man opposite Steven is heading off to Marine boot camp. We pray he will have a good experience, and be protected by our Lord. This was also one of the mildest parties these three have ever had, no drinking for Russ it doesn't go well with his meds.

Off to the doctors tomorrow to remove stitches and see how Russ's pelvis is healing. Hopefully we'll be able to get a timeline of milestones. Russ and I are both feeling the frustration of the unknown and boredom is really setting in for him. Anyone that wants to make house visits give him a call he's thrilled to talked with outsiders (which is pretty much anyone but family).

The Men of the Cave take on plumbing

Thanks to Hector, Louie, Rolfy, and Pablo, for installing a sink in our garage. Church on Christmas Eve and the wedding we've all been waiting for Jon Llera finally took the plunge. We are so happy for the bride and groom and Russ was so excited to be able to attend the event.

Congratulations to Jon and Marites, we love you.
We're still trying to navigate our way through his recuperation
every new setup takes time to get used too. We'll make it through, with prayer and his grace.

Tomorrow the pins come out of Russ's wrist, so one more restriction down we hope. We are so excited that he was home on Christmas Eve and we got to attend our Church service what a blessing. It's a lot of work having him home with the use of only one hand and one foot for pivoting only, but I guess he's worth it. I kinda of feel like I did when I brought home Lauren, so much stuff to learn and so little sleep. This is why I had children when I was young and had the energy. I will survive and so will he, hopefully I won't break him. God is with us every step of the way, if he wasn't we'd both be on the floor. Thanks for all the welcome homes, Russ feels so loved.

Farewell to all my friends at Sharp Rehab

Tonight is the last night in the hospital for Russ. Tomorrow Christmas Eve the present I wanted the most is being delivered, Russ is coming home for good. It's been a good week, he's made a lot of progress and his therapists are kicking him out. They say they've taught him all they can for now, he can transfer from bed to wheelchair with very little help and he even stands upright with a platform walker, basically uses his arms to support his body and pushes with his left foot. He can get dressed in bed with the help of all of his nifty tools, and can even brush his own hair:) Oh, speaking of hair for all of you who think he can't grow any, just check out the picture of how much I cut off of his head. We hope to see all of you soon, Merry Christmas and God Bless.

Rehab happenings

It's been awhile since I updated you all, here's the latest scoop. Russ' progress meeting went well on Friday and there was talk of him coming home for good this week, yes this week. It all depends on tomorrow mornings home inspection, Russ gets to come home in the morning with his Occupational therapist to see what accommodations are needed for him at the house. Anyone know of a cheap elevator for houses, I would love for my husband to be able to sleep up stairs. Just dreaming, we'll have to convert the living or family room into a bedroom. The biggest challenge is going to be a bathroom, if you've been to our house you know the downstairs powder room is the size of a coat closet. I have faith that it will all work out some how and we'll all be living together soon.

Russ has made friends at Sharp as you can see from the pic he still finds ways to have fun. This is his across the hall neighbor Steve, Steve's wife decided the boys needed a way to occupy themselves while in bed (they face each other across the hall). The only problem is they need retrievers for the spent ammo. That's where I come in, it's like having a toddler again:) Anything to keep them from whinning. Well I'll let you know what the out come is tomorrow. Keep praying, it's all in his hands.

A Busy two days

Well it's been a really busy couple of days. Russ's first field trip was to see the Urologist back over at the Scripps facility, of course I had to get a picture of him in front of the hospital where he lived for over two weeks. The doctor says the catheter stays in until the first of January then he'll see if the bladder injury is healed, if it is the catheter stays out. Pray for stays out.

On Tuesday it was back up to La Jolla to visit the orthopaedic doctor that is in charge of his wrist. The cast came off, xrays were taken and the doc says everything is healing well. Russ left with a splint and instruction that he can now remove it twice a day and flex his wrist and fingers. He was so happy, Dec. 29 the pins come out and he can get his arm wet. He'll wear a brace for a while and get to start therapy on his arm.

So Tuesday afternoon he had PT and OT and then it was time to party. There was a Holiday party Luau, catered by L and L. Family was invited and Steven was all over the island food, we even got a show Hula dancers. It was fun to spend time with my two men out of a hospital room.

Sunday at Sharp Rehab

We started the day with Vanana yogurt from Trader Joes, and a Orange Cranberry muffin from Panera. Yes, I actually made it up there for breakfast it's not home but at least the food was like home. Than we had Church service via DVD thanks to the great team at Eastlake that sent up the DVDs. It was so good to sit together and hear the messages, it really lifted our spirits. Can't wait until Russ and I can go back to church together. Then it was a little outside time and back in to watch football, it's Sunday after all. Russ got to attend his small group tonight all the guys loaded up and came to him with food and everything, how awesome is that.

Russ called tonight to say this was a great day and to top everything off the wound vac they had on his leg (where he had surgery on Tues.) was removed and his leg and stitches look great. Tomorrow it's up to LaJolla for a doctors visit (another ride in some sort of medical transport) to see how his bladder is healing. Things are moving along, thanks for all your prayers, and visits they mean more then you know.

Back in the groove

Well they got Russ right back to therapy on Wed. and have been working him hard. He's settled into the routine and is doing well all things considered. He's happy that he can have more guests now and grateful to everyone that has taken time out of their crazy holiday schedule to come by and say hi. For anyone visiting make sure you bring in your parking ticket to be validated, it will save you a lot of money. We're looking forward to the weekend when we can spend more time together. Maybe even watch a movie in his room, no hall pass for this guy yet.

Surgery done

Well today was another roller coaster ride, I was at work getting a few things done when the hospital called to say Russ was on his way up to surgery. What! Surgery was scheduled for 3pm not 10am. So off my sister and I go to the hospital to wait for the news. Well it went well and they removed 1/2 of a liter of fluid from his leg (uck). He has a little more pain tonight, but it's back to therapy tomorrow morning. He's being so good natured about everything, keeping the staff laughing and me too. I love this guy so much, can't wait to get him home.

Another Surgery for Russ

Tomorrow 12-8-09 at 3:00 Russ will have small surgery to remove fluid from his left leg, and to clean out and sew up a wound on the same leg. The doctors say this will help his leg to stay infection free and heal quicker. It should take about 1.5 hours and he will be back at the Rehab center the same day. They'll probably give him Wednesday off of therapy, but he'll be back on it Thursday. Please pray for a quick recovery and for the skills of the doctors.

Russ's Ride

Another day at re-hab, Russ is getting used to the routine and settling in. Of course he's making friends with everyone and he's working really hard at keeping his muscles pumped. When he found out that in 2 weeks laying in the hospital you loose 20% of your muscle mass, he was shocked. So for now until he can bear weight on his legs (pelvis) (that's not until February) the therapists are trying to strengthen his muscles without hindering his recovery.
Tomorrow Sunday he gets the day off for good behaviour. I'll be trying to keep up with him in his hot rod. No he hasn't forgotten it's just a little different when you have one hand (his left) to use and can't sit up past a 60 degree angle. Can you imagine breaking a sweat putting on your shoes, me either. Russ had a smile on his face, and was so excited to show me his new wheels. Yes, they gave him a motorized wheel chair to use scary, the halls of re-hab won't be safe as long as he's there. The funny part the chair cost more than his car, what a sweet ride. We don't know when he'll be home yet, but he will be home on Christmas day. They've arranged a day pass and transportation to the house. He'll be in a wheel chair, but home eating ham and apple pie. We're really glad he won't be spending another holiday in the hospital.

For anyone visiting or wanting to call, Russ will be changing rooms tomorrow so check at the nurses station to see where he is. I'll post the new information as soon as I have it.

God is good and in control

A Banner Day!!!

Russ has had a banner day today, staples removed, street clothes on, and getting into a wheel chair for threapy. Russ sat up at 60 degrees with the help of a cool electric chair and he traveled to Sharp Rehabilitation Hospital (by Mary Birch). It is scary and exciting at the same time. They’ll be keeping him really busy the next couple of days with evaluations and Friday we’ll have our first goal meeting. We are hoping to understand more in the terms of length and steps of recovery then. So grateful for the care all of the medical professionals have given and the support and prayers of all our family and friends. He's moving and flexing more everyday.
Not sure what day he'll move to rehab, it's one day at a time.

Thanksgiving Blessing

Russ is feeling better today, he had real turkey and everything.
